The Lions of Batucada are as open and inviting as possible. A typical bateria can have roughly 300 members, so we're always looking for new drummers and dancers!
Before joining the group, new drummers typically attend samba technique classes. The Lions hold classes most Saturdays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at: Rhythm Traders, 424 NE Broadway, Portland, Ore. 97232, 503-288-6950. The cost is $12.
Once prospective members decide on an instrument and become comfortable with its technique, they begin attending ensemble rehearsals. Ensemble rehearsals focus on how each instrument fits with the group, as well as rehearsing breaks, features and other Lions repertoire. Full Ensemble rehearsals are held on Sundays from Noon to 3:00 p.m. at: Center Space, 420 SE 6th Ave., Portland, Ore. 97214.
In addition, some instrument sections meet one other weekday to focus on material or technique specific to that instrument. Surdos and Caixas on Monday, Tamborim on Wednesday, etc.
Finally, once a new member is comfortable with their instrument, how it fits into the bateria, and the Lions repertoire, they may be invited to perform with the bateria.
The amount of time spent learning the drums, parts, and/or steps can vary greatly. Depending on one's background, aptitude, and the instrument chosen, members have begun performing with the bateria in as little as 3 months to as long as 2 years.
